I chose the Spicer kit so I didn't have to mess with it, plus it's OE manufacturer.
For everything else I've gotten the Spicer part. Not only is it OE for the drivetrain but it's easier on the wallet to get it from Spicer instead of Ford. I figured a lifetime warranty was work it to try the XRF since I do the labor myself.
You always have great write ups on your projects.Any chance of one for this project?
Thanks!
I was a mess and 3 days (partials) into the whole project and my helper was back in school and left for karate class before I got to the ball joints.
But I am going to do the passenger front ball joints very soon- I have an ESOF thread started to ask advice as it is clicking and I want to rebuild it and service both at the same time.
I can take more pics and write up some stuff to add to the knowledge base
I know I did not do it too much.....can't hardly get a grease gun nozzle on the confounded thing
My grandfather who lived in Cullman Al use to say "confounded" all the time. He was born in 1896 and went home in 1989. What I'd give to go rabbit hunting with him one more time.
As far as ball joints go jist don't get the Moog. The boots will not stay in position and will let water and grime in causing premature failure. Gone thru 2 sets. Got about 1-1.5 years out of both. And no I didn't grease to much, just kept a little bulge on the boot n

I'm learning this lesson with customer vehicles and even my own...
I currently have Moog all over the front end of Rudolph and the boots do indeed leak since they never do fully seat. The Spicer ball joints don't have boots in the way, so you can get them to fully seat and not have to worry about damaging a boot or struggling to get the boot to seat after install.
Those work well, but you gotta be sure to get them all the way on and line up carefully. If your zerk gets beat up, it may not fit. But saving that, looks like just the ticket
It might help to turn your front wheels towards the center of the truck and rotate the axle so the u-joint ears move out of the way.
That's how I reached them on my last set. Even with grinding the head a bit for clearance I still broke them off (probably off-roading). This set I just have the cap in there and I put the 90 degree zerk in when I grease. It's frustrating to try and thread those little buggers in there with my sausage fingers each time now but it's better than breaking them off.
