I have a 1988 f150 with a 5.0 automatic 4x4. Was driving down the road the other day and it sputtered and died. Acted like it ran out of gas so put a few gallons in and tried it. It started but once the throttle is pressed it dies. It has good fuel pressure stays constant 40-45psi. Truck will idle fine but if I press throttle fast it dies if I bring Rpms up slow it will rev up. Checked spark and it loses spark when the issue occurs. Have replaced the pick up in the distributor and the ignition module still has same problem. Had an ecm out of another truck that I tried and still the same. Also tried a spare coil and map sensor just to see and still the same. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what direction to go? There are no codes I checked with scantool.
The only thing I can think of is some wiring fault between the distributor and ICM. I would try spraying starting fluid into it when it starts to die to verify loss of spark.
