I am rebuilding my fuel bowl and I know that a short in there is somewhat of a regular occurrence on our trucks. What shorts out? Should I just replace the element? Is there a way to test the set up to see if it's compromised in any way? Or should I just leave well enough alone on that?
It's the heater element at the bottom of the bowl that usually shorts out blowing fuse #30. You can replace or just remove / disconnect. If you disconnect you will also lose your WIF sensor. Personal choice, either way it's not a big deal or hard job to do. I personally have just disconnected mine, I drain my fuel bowl periodically just to make sure I don't have any water accumulation in there.
Mark, I just bought (sitting in the garage) all of the seals, o-rings and parts to rebuild the fuel bowl on my truck. I bought a replacement heater from Clay at the link below.
It is the updated version and should work pretty well for many years to come. Alternatively you could also just unplug the heater like Rikster did.
For me, knowing the future of my truck which will be pulling our home on wheels around the country and Canada in the future I wanted to have the heater just in case. Since I was going to be in there cleaning and replacing everything, I figured it was worth the extra $40 for the new part.
P.S. - Some people remove the valve in the middle of the bowl that looks like a stem. It shuts fuel off in the event that the truck is running without a filter in the housing. I remember a thread a while back where someone had cleaned the valve and then didn't get it lined up just right which was causing low fuel pressure during any portion of the truck running except idle. It might have been Baatzy, but I cannot remember.
I will probably eliminate this valve as well when I rebuild the bowl on my truck. Don't forget about the fresh coat of paint on the outside too! We love pictures...
I have ordered the O-rings already and the element was an afterthought, I usually don't fix stuff if it ain't broke. Where do they short out at? The one I'm working with is round like the one ExPAcamper shows a picture of, this one came out of the '03 short bus and might have been replaced before. I have the luxury of rebuilding the extra bowl then throwing it in when I perform my major operation. I thought about painting for a second but then I'd have to clean 'er up pretty good then decide on a color, etc.
Sous is right, I was the one who didn't line the stem up right. It would allow me to pull the fuel pressure down to 20-25 on a WOT run if I wanted. Make sure that gets put back together right.
I also had an issue with FP being too high, turned out to be the FPR not regulating correctly. Still haven't figured that one out completely, ended up putting a stock FPR housing back on instead of the FRx.
