4.0 Massive coolant.

So i scooped up a ranger that had a cracked radiator. Replaced radiator in about 30 minutes. Got it fired up and coolant was going everywhere out the exhaust. No coolant in the oil or oil in coolant. What do you guys think it is?

Vehicle Info:

2000 Ranger
4.0 V6
228k on engine.
Automatic

Sounds like it might be a cracked head,,, pull the plugs one at a time and look at the tips,,, if it is getting wet you will see it easy !

Well it's a lot of coolant. Is this a common issue on these OHV engines?

Cracked head not unheard of in the 4.0, was more common in earlier 2.8/2.9 motors. OHV motor is usually trouble free, vs. the SOHC motor which has serious cam chain issues right out of the box.

With those miles on it, look for a replacement or figure on a rebuild. It was no doubt overheated x number of times due to that radiator issue. Overheating is not our friend in general and really not our friend on these motors.

Good luck with it.

With the OHV, any evidence of overheating.....

Seriously, besides being run out of oil, that's the killer for these.

I've had 2 of these engines. 1 in a 1999 Ranger. And one in a 1992 explorer

A little thirsty but otherwise a good motor for those applications methinks. We have '99 Exploder with one. Best feature of the vehicle.....

Will the SOHC motor work in this truck? And i found a 4.0 off a 1995 Aerostar. Will this engine work?

SOHC motor will not work without the ECM and harness changes etc. IMO RUN from any used SOHC motor. Only those already so inflicted should deal with that engine.

I am pretty sure that any OHV 4.0 will work. But you have to transplant your intake and any wire, sensor etc, intake or exhaust so that your ECM will run the engine. And check for accessory compatibility.

I just want the engine. I'll transfer everything. This 1995 Aerostar van had the 4.0. And he said the engine ran perfect when pulled.
