Is the restriction gauge actually needed on the ais filter box? Or can I plug the hole?
I've got a filter on the way, and will be re- installing the ais box on arrival. Just realized that the restriction gauge wasn't on it, and don't know if I "need" it or not.
its a kind of sorta type thing, yes it is needed (as far as plugging up the hole) as the hole is going to let unfiltered air in, so yes to both of your questions, as to its effective use, thats debateable, I have my AIS and there is a rubber panel that I removed as it covered the intake of the filter box (left less then 1 inch of usable space to draw in air) and I have had no issues with the filter minder on my intake. More can be found in my build thread (forget which page I have the install of the AIS on)
The AIS filter minder is weaker than the original, so it would do you well to utilize the original filter minder. By having the filter minder in there, I learned how far I could go between filter changes. It was also one more piece of evidence to use when I saw/heard certain things going on with the truck that let me know it was time to change filters. I took that knowledge and used it when I swapped to the S&B (with no filter minder) for the bigger turbo. I know from experience with my AIS when it is time to swap out the S&B, and I now get half the life of the AIS element.
I would certainly give credence into having the correct unit installed.
I don't know what year truck you have. If you don't have the Indicator on the Dash (Idiot Light), you have a way to monitor.
If not, You can easily use an LED to monitor. Merely run a hot wire (in line 2.5 AMP Fuse) to the unit, the other to the lamp, the last to a ground in the Cab. If it closes due to restriction, you will have an indicator in the Cab.
We did this on many Ambulances back in the day and as recently as a few years ago when they were upgrading to the AIS before delivery. Seems once the Military developed them they took off like wildfire (pun). IMO: ANYTHING is netter than the stock air box.
Okay, so when my filter gets here before the restriction gauge, I can go ahead and install the ais box and filter, and just plug that hole with something till the restriction gauge comes? I just don't wanna wait for the gauge to come to get the box installed if I don't need to.
yes you can, just be sure that what ever is going to plug the hole for a short time will NOT be able to get sucked into your turbo, bad juju might happen...turbo death will be guaranteed if that were to happen....
