Guess this racket!

00 F250 338k auto
No error codes or warning lights (Forscan verified)
No smoke out of the exhaust
No oil or coolant leaks

Have banging noise from the motor

When cold truck sounds normal, quiet

When it warms up, the banging becomes audible

You can hear it at idle

You can hear it under acceleration

Frequency increases with RPM

When at speed, and letting off the throttle, noise goes away.....comes back when back on the throttle

Any time during driving when I let off, engine quiets down to normal

To me it sounds like exhaust leak, bur not sure how to check for those?

Help, thanks!

Get a flashlight and look around the manifolds for any signs of soot. I've never heard an exhaust leak described as a "banging" sound.

It's like loud clicking, clapping....like extra loud cackle. I have had 20 PSDs and never had one with noise like this

Truck runs great otherwise 19mpg mixed and no other issues

Could it be an injector or two has worked loose? Have you checked the torque on them?

Banging??
If it was a gas engine, based on quiet when letting off, I'd say (& I know nothing),
to look at the wrist pins on the pistons.
BUT, this is Diesel, only 1-1/2 yrs under my belt.
So, with that in mind, I await all you guys opines on this.

I considered wrist pin, or valve rocker, but those would still be spinning at 2000rpm when I let off the throttle at 70mph.....only thing that makes sense is that exhaust back pressure prevents the exhaust leak when you let off the gas

I'm not going to say it couldn't be an exhaust leak but wouldn't an exhaust leak that could make a bang/tick cause a boost issue or at least a massive exhaust leak under boost? It would have to be pre-turbo.

I seem to recall a thread recently that the injector hold down bolt/stud wasn't loose but actually bent letting the injector move....

It's very similar to the video, just a little louder. Like a knock. I'll video it and post in the morning

Mine used to do it pretty loud when I was low on fuel and getting air in the lines. A hutch mod and an FRX from Riffraff will take care of it.

I mostly run near full fuel tank. Know well the noise it makes when getting low and air in the lines. It does sound like that.

I have done hutch before, I'll try it here too...and sending unit is acting up maybe fix that as well while in there.
