If it was a gas engine, based on quiet when letting off, I'd say (& I know nothing),
to look at the wrist pins on the pistons.
BUT, this is Diesel, only 1-1/2 yrs under my belt.
So, with that in mind, I await all you guys opines on this.
I considered wrist pin, or valve rocker, but those would still be spinning at 2000rpm when I let off the throttle at 70mph.....only thing that makes sense is that exhaust back pressure prevents the exhaust leak when you let off the gas
I'm not going to say it couldn't be an exhaust leak but wouldn't an exhaust leak that could make a bang/tick cause a boost issue or at least a massive exhaust leak under boost? It would have to be pre-turbo.
I seem to recall a thread recently that the injector hold down bolt/stud wasn't loose but actually bent letting the injector move....
