When mine did that it was the #8 injector. You could really hear it inside. To me it sounds injector related. Piston pins are a problem also in these engines but to now I haven't had that problem. Check you exhaust manifolds also.

#8 LL was throwing code intermittently when cold, I shimmed it back to spec and code is gone.

I have spare injector but it's not Long Lead, it's regular. Can I install it in #8? FullForceDiesel told me they are all the same, but #8 sure looks different with blue connector and LL on the coil.

Should be fine. I have all single shots installed in my superduty. It was only installed to help prevent the cackling sound that was posted about before BUT the sound SHOULD ONLY APPEAR DURING IDLE for it to be cackle related. Or at least that is what I have read and heard everywhere.

Yes, the earlier trucks all had same injectors. When the valve covers are off, check all your push rods, rockers and springs. I'd turn it over by hand so that when at TDC on each cylinder you can spin @ push rod and push on @ spring. We've had people here in the pass with broken springs, bent push rods, even a cracked rockers. You have to pull the cover off any way and that will eliminate that, if okay. If you still showing code on #8 and have spare, give it a shot for sure. The video sounded different when idling.

get a 1-100 PSI tire gauge and see what fuel pressure is at idle and WOT

It does sound like an exhaust leak and or starved injectors. put a leaf blower to tail pipe and get some soapy water in a spray bottle and look for bubbles at all mating surfaces on manifold and up pipes

Thanks. Will try that.

Today i.discovered that my fuel line connector on the back of the fuel pump (suction side) is missing that white plastic clip that locks it on there. It was basically being held on by the tension of the rubber fuel line. I suspect it was sucking in air there as truck would move. Fixed it by running straight fuel hose from hard line into pump rear nipple. Truck still has some of the clapping, but has picked up some pep as well. I will drive it tonight see if it clears out the air. Also checked fuel filter, bowl was full of clean diesel and filter was very clean, like new.

I am still only boosting 11ish.

Tuesday I will put on spare injector into #8 and se if that makes a difference.

I installed fuel pressure gauge, and get only 48psi at idle, and it drops as soon as I give it throttle.

So, I'll try new fuel pump next and see if it increases and holds pressure

Without reading back, that is a signs of in tank or pinched line also so look at that if you haven't addressed that.

Could also be a crumbled pickup foot with pieces getting lodged into the suction tube.

maybe try to put suction and return line into a bucket and test it

Then you can rule out pump or tank/line issue

D2? As in a tank selector?

Great Idea! do this and it will rule out pump being bad if pressure stays the same.
