6 is cuttin out

I was drivin down the road the other day and just as I was about to shift to 3rd I lost fuel or else spark for about 3 sec. then it kicked back in agian. I just shrugged it off and now to days later it did it twice today just in town. I thought it might have been the fuel filter, but why would it run good the rest of the day? Then I thought the advance was screwed up, but it did it at a lower rpm today in 4th gear. I thought maybe the battery cable was loose and I lost power, but it starts the pickup fine all the time. I recently got a Holley Reman for the truck, so it could be some weird carb prob. but I don't know what would cause the occasional problem. Only other thing I can think of is a short in the battery. It's a 86 F-150 4x4 with a 300. Any other ideas on this problem?

I had that problem twice. Once it was a loose spark plug the other time it was a bad coil. That would only short out once in a while.

I've been thinking, and could it possiably be something like mild vapor lock? Because all the times it's done it, it's been in the afternoon, not in the morning or night and above 96 degrees. But it's never done it in the 17 years it's been around.

Cowboy,

I sorta had the same problem once, only my truck would take a few minutes to recover after cutting out.

In my case, it was the ignition module. I went to the auto part store and bought two (one for a spare). They cost about $20.

Good luck with it.

Well it was a 103 here in Nebraska today and I didn't have any problems, so I'm still clueless to what is going on.

Cowboy,

In my case it didn't seem to be dependent on either outside or engine compartment temperature.

The first cutout happened when I was in northen AZ, where the temp was in the low 70s. It cut out a couple of times, and I ended up getting a hotel room rather than risk the 120 mile trip on a Sunday night. The next morning the truck started right up and I drove back to Phoenix (and the heat) with no problems.

The day after that, when the temp was in the low 100s, it cut out again two blocks from home.

I don't know if this helps, but it's something to look at, anyway.

Good luck with it.

Check the plug on the ignition module, and the one on the coil. These were bad on my truck when I got it, and caused an intermittent cut-out that also blew the muffler off.
