I have an 02 crew cab SB 7.3L. The best way to I know to describe it is a sorta like a metal ringing noise. It just started this afternoon while pulling a 9k camper. It only does it under load. Boost stays the same and it happens in all ranges from 5psi to 15psi. It is intermittent. It sounds like it it coming from the turbo. I pulled off the boot and could not feel any play on the intake wheel. After unhooking trailer and taking for a test drive I can not get it to do it again? The turbo was rebuilt about 4 years ago with a wicked wheel but has only seen about 18k miles since the rebuild. A quick look at the boots appear good but didn't get to take them off before going to work. I will try to post video. Any ideas would be great.
Another fellow recently posted something similar and found a hole in one of his CAC boots near the turbo. This turned out to be his problem. Other than that... I'm not sure Unless the turbo bearing isn't being lubricated but I would expect a quick and nasty failure at that point.
Sorry if it's been posted. Still searching the forum for possibilities. I am going to try to take the boots of tomorrow before the down pours. Figured I'd post my exact problem and see if anyone had any ideas.
Not a problem! Just wanted to add that as a basis for my first thought. Erm the other thought I just had was check your air box and hose leading into the turbo. Maybe there's a small leak making a nasty whistle.
CAC boot leak
damaged CAC boot
fan clutch
belt tensioner
belt
other pulley on serpentine belt
mine did that a few years ago and it turned out being the belt. I changed the belt and the issue went away. Another user recently found he had a hole in one of his CAC boots. Another found a bad belt tensioner. It may be worth it to check one at a time to make sure you find the culprit, or you could shotgun it and check all these at once and see if it helps....
Ringing noise and a wicked wheel? What intake do you have? If it's a stocker, leaks are common - and you could be hearing the wheel through the opened intake. Anybody with an open-element filter (like the 6637) knows this sound intimately.
Not sure if its the boot yet or not? I put it back together like it was with old cut boot didn't do it at first but has done it twice since but that's all.
I thought it was the 4 bolts that hold the turbo to backing plate on exhaust side. ( See Pics )
I am going to replace the cut boot and try again. Mine only does it when its in a hard pull. Also when its sitting in park if you rev it high enough
it would do it. Tried today and cannot make it do it. So I spent 2 days on this project and I'm still kinda stumped.
I have the 6637 diy intake, had it for years . It is definitely not that sound. It just started and It only does it on a really hard pull also. I haven't got it to do it at idle or without a heavy trailer in tow. I tried to upload video with the sound but have been unsuccessful. It's not a squeak like a belt. It is almost like a high pitched metal ringing. I checked the boots and have not found any tears or cracks
The other day I had same metallic squeal noise while pulling 8k trailer up a grade. It made the noise when it shifted down and RPM's increased. It is the only time it's happened. I have checked the turbo it's OK. I removed the belt and spun the top idler roller and both tensioner rollers. Top idler and 1 tensioner roller felt rough when spun. I ordered new idler and tensioner from Clay.
Pretty sure you guys are hearing your fan clutch. Mine does the same thing exact thing you're describing, and it's only audible when the fan kicks in. Been wondering if that means it's about to fail.

I will find it by process of elimination. I have replaced both idlers, a/c compressor, belt, pulled turbo and tightened all 4 bolts, intake boot.
Check spturboost.com good product at a great prices. Power gains don't know but boost gain, and egt reduction are possible. If you decide to get a fan clutch make sure its an OEM unit because the aftermarket ones suck.
