I've been looking along the firewall (like the book says) for a week and I still can't find the MAP sensor.
It's a '96 Ford F-150 with the 300 strait 6 cyl. A mechanic friend of mine told me I needed it and then went on vaction before he could tell me where it was !!!!

You acually have a MAF sensor. This is located inside the tube that runs from the airbox to the throttle body. You will see wires running to it. I seriously doubt you need a new one though.
A '96 should be mass-air, not speed-density. There is no MAP sensor. Look for large MAF sensor that is part of the pipe between the air cleaner and the throttle body.
I was told so by a mechanic friend that I THOUGHT knew what he was talking about.
My idle is strange. We replaced the head after getting it a little too hot (long story and not worth re-living the pain). The idle was always weird (running up then down and almost stalling then picking back up...not very high RPM, just enough to keep running)...and my buddy who helped me install the new head said that the problem was the MAP sensor.
Now I'm lost, I don't know which way to go. Did a full tune up and the song remains the same...
Get someone to pull the computer codes to start. Some Autozones will do that for free. Since it is a '96, the old trick of using a paperclip to read codes will not work. It is what they call OBD-II. Just buying sensors based on guesswork is a very expensive way of doing diagnosis. Your problem sounds like the IAC (idle air control) valve, but get the codes first.
YES take it to Autozone! They pulled my codes and gave me the printouts with explanations on them. Had 4 codes... both O2 sensors, EGR, PFE ("bout $200 parts) but on the printouts they all said look for vacuum leaks. Turned out to be a $10 rubber hose! Also gives testing procedures on printouts.
Shotgun method, replacing parts till it works, became obsolete in the 80's.
