I have 1996 Ford F-250 that I just put a axle in that came out of a 2003 Ford F-350 this week. I test drove it today and my locking hub fell out of the driver side. I looked for it but couldn't find it. I drove home and the ring fell off of the passenger side from driving it back but the hub hadn't fallen out yet. what can I do to keep the hubs from falling out
Should just have an O-ring and a Big spring clip. Might have to take the clip and pull it out a little bit give it some more retaining pressure. Make sure the rotors and hubs are good and clean on the inside so that it's seats all the way. Make sure the spring clip pops into the groove
May not have been seated properly. Might need to stretch the clips a little. Hubs falling off these trucks is not something that happens. The clip system is simple but works. Recheck everything because something is not installed right, with the hubs themselves or with the axles.
Use a little wd 40 on the clip to make sure it seats completely in the groove. Those with experience know to pry and wiggle the clip to make sure it is completely seated. You are not the first one to lose those hubs after working on them.
I'd recommend buying a set of warn locking hubs for it. They are stronger and have a more secure way of attaching to the axle than the stockers. I grenaded one of the stock hubs on my truck and replaced them with warns. Couldn't be happier.
Probably the last guy who piddled, fooled, messed with the hubs had not a clue and did not bother to clean the seat the snap ring fits in, let alone ensure the snap ring seated properly.
Unfortunately even "certified techs" can at times fall short on simple procedures.
