Starting Issues

Ok folks, I've got this 1999 F-150 4.6 litre truck that won't start. Brand new battery, alternator and starter. Just had starter replaced today, drove for a while ok now it won't start again!

Could this be corroded battery cables or bad cables/ground from battery to starter??

Any help here would be very much appreciated.

Frustrated as heck,

-Mike

Is it a no crank?
If yes, it's a fault in the start circuit from the battery to the starter.
Start relay on the fire wall, corroded connections etc.
No crank can be the transmission selector switch , the shifter cable not allowing a complete circuit from the ignition switch through Park or Neutral positions.
.
If crank no start, the engine control system has a fault.
Fuse seating, PCM relay or it's contacts etc/
Which is it?
Good luck.

She isn't cranking at all. And I must say that it's sometimes starting, sometimes not. I picked her up at the mechanics and she started no prob. Later on in the day, no crank at all.

So I guess I can replace the cables running from the battery to the starter? I'm not super knowledgeable with regard to electrical stuff so you'd have to kinda walk me through it.

I've got the tear down- rebuild book if I need specs, though.
It'd be great if I could fix this myself....mechanic's been getting too much of my coin lately!
Thanks in advance, good sir!

Or maybe I'll get her towed to my mechanic and get them to check all the points in question for faults??? Yeah, I think I'll do this.

It's not difficult to replace the battery/starter cables, it's just a matter of getting the proper length (that's what she said) and using it (also what she said). Starter + to Battery +, starter ground to frame, frame to Battery - . I did mine in a foot of snow in the dark after building them during the day, it's a breeze to pull them out if you follow them from the top.

Just keep in mind that bolts DO break. If one does snap, as long as it has a good ground path, you can route it any which way you want.

Look at the battery cable as it heads toward the starter motor... As Bluegrass said, it is not a direct run.. It should run to a relay mounted to the firewall.. Sometimes the cable is OK, the relay may have bad contacts.............. but yes, check for corrosion on all cable ends also.

also wiggle the shift lever in or out of gear, when it wont start... maybe the neutral start switch is not always contacting.

Actually, the firewall Starter Relay is what triggers the small S terminal to fire up the starter. The power cable is a straight shot to the starter. Fortunately, these relays are common as dirt

Crawl under your truck and check the starter ends of the cables. Mine died mid crank a few months ago. Lug on + terminal broke in half.
