Starter won't crank

i have a 1976 ford f100 pickup. for awhile, after it would run for awhile and was shut off, it would be really hard to start back up or would have to be jumped. now it won't start up at all. i did find out that my starter was bad, so i replaced that. the battery is fine and the alternator is practically new. replaced the solenoid also. when trying to turn it over, it makes a clicking noise. i think it may be a relay somewhere, but it is driving me crazy and i can't figure it out. any help would be greatly appreciated.

New solenoids don't necessarily mean they will work!

Do some checks:

Power in Battery ( Fully Charged ?)

Jump power lead from battery directly to S Terminal to see if it cranks.

the old solenoid did the same thing.battery has 11.7 volts on meter.turned ignition key on, but the volts read 0 on the other side of the solenoid that leads to the starter. i'm gonna check out the safety switch tomorrow.how can you tell if it is bad?

Do you mean Key in Run position or in start position ?

The power doesn't go to the starter without power to the S terminal on the relay.

11.7 is low -Recharge it fully, then try again.

If there is something clicking when you turn the key ro Start, then the NSS is fine.

Your problem is between the Battery & the Starter

key turned to the right.not trying to turn over but just stay on.are there any relays that could be bad? is there a way to test the solenoid? is the best thing to do is jump it with a screwdriver?what would have caused the truck not to crank after running for 1/2 hr.when motor is hot, then turned off and tried to start again, it wouldn't. this of course, was before this problem.

What happens when you turn the key to Start ?

Screwdriver, pliers are okay but I prefer a 10 gauge wire with an alligator clips.

When power gets to the S terminal the power from the battery runs through the relay to the starter cable.

That battery sounds low in power though.

Heat will cause resistence in electrical circuits. The problems you are describing is why some truck owners install larger guage battery cables than stock sizes. As Dennis stated, charge your battery to full charge. New cables or not, remove the connections and clean the surfaces they mount to. That includes wire brushing the block where the ground cable is attached. Clean the paint from under the solenoid switch too 'cause that is where it is grounded. Then attempt to crank again. If it still doesn't start, turn the key to run position and jump the battery side of the solenoid switch to the "S" post on the same switch. If it then cranks, get a new solenoid switch (Motorcraft preferred). If it doesn't, the starter may be the culprit. Heat will cause a starter to fail. I had an old '76 Lincoln that wouldn't start when hot until I cooled the starter with a water hose. Had to park near a water spiggot till I could afford to replace the starter. All this is considering that your battery is in good shape and would pass a load test.

Question mine either

I just got my poppa's 78 f100 and i'm trying to get it running. the problem that you are having is the same thing i think. when I turn the key to start it makes a fast clicking noise. I cant seem to get it working. I replaced the solenoid but it is still doing the same thing. any hints? I am new at this so I don't know all the terminology, i wasn't quite sure about everything you were talking about

my problem was pretty simple and that was that my battery didn't have enough power to turn over the motor. it showed 11.7v on the volt meter. which obviously wasn't enough because it didn't start. i was told to check all the connections to the starter, solenoid, and battery. make sure they aren't loose. check battery cables to see if they are broken, frayed, and need replacement. some cars will start with low volt readings, but i charged up my battery up and it fired right up.

I cleaned every connection but it still didn't start. would the starter be seized? We tried to pull start the truck but it was too icy and the tires just skidded. is there anything else that it could be?

you can try tapping the starter with a hammer. it takes about 5-10 minutes to take off a starter, so you could take it off and get a local parts store to test it. a new one will cost you about 35-40 bucks with your old one.is your battery weak? is it putting out enough volts?
