i have a 2011 e250 super duty 4.6 standard length van with 140,000 miles. truck has been great until it suddenly started slipping after about a half hour of driving. it screams without moving and then bangs violently in and out of gear. it becomes drivable after it cools off. so 2 questions
1. ive heard that sometimes the tranny could have metal shavings and pieces clog up the filter and cause this condition due to lack of fluid being circulated. i understand that if it has enough internal pieces clogging the filter, it must be ruined, but i would take a shot at changing the filter and fluid if it saves me a 2000 dollar rebuild for another few months.

2. what tranmission is this? a 4r100?
thanks!
I'm pretty sure they didn't use the 4r100 as recently as 2011.
And exactly what do ou mean by "screams without moving" ?
If your transmission has truly slipped for more than about 5-8 seconds (total, cumulative), then you cannot avoid a rebuild / replacement.
I had this happen on another vehicle, suspiciously after an oil change. As it turned out, the quickie oil change place "topped off" the transmission fluid, resulting in an over-full state. Draining some fluid to the proper level corrected the issue.
So check to make sure the transmission is not overfilled...
Check your fluid level. Auto with low fluid can not shift properly. Might still be able to save it though I hear the ford trannys aren't the best in being "revived".
