Help please
Problem; had been driving for an hr and truck, which was running fine shut off like someone turned the fuel off. Check engine light came on, motor cranked but wouldn't start Back up. After an hr or so it fired back up and ran fine. This happened several times until now it will not start on it's own. I use a quick shot of starting fluid it fires right up and runs fine. Have run truck for 1/2hr or so driving it and no issues except check engine light staying on. Shut it off and it will not start again without starting fluid, which I've only used 2x and sparingly. Generic code reader says no codes.
Is it vapor lock ? Under valve cover plugs connection ?
Any help or suggestions ? Thanks
Second, stop using the starting fluid. It really is bad for these motors and there's a huge chance that you'll be doing far more damage.
Last, get the code read. That's going to be the quickest method to diagnose the problem. However, generic code readers cannot read Ford Powerstroke codes. You'll have to go to a dealer or a diesel shop to get the codes pulled.
Off the top of my head, the CPS (cam position sensor) and the IPR (injection pressure regulator) are the two most common items that would malfunction and cause the issue that you are experiencing. Having a code pop up helps narrow down the problem so you aren't throwing parts at it hoping for the best.
I agree about starting fluid. 1st time was a necessity to get home and 2nd was a diagnostic to verify a repeat before I started throwing money at it.
Are there any Bluetooth apps or code scanners that are affordable and do work ?
I will check the 2 items you mentioned and let you know what I find.

Much appreciated. Checked with local parts house and they have 1 for 25.00 so I'm going to change it just to eliminate probability. I'm use to a cps going bad and motor shutting off once it heats up or not starting at all but not a bad cps firing with starting fluid and running fine for 45 min. Then when you turn it off not starting again Unless you fog it, but....
Just out of curiosity, anyone know the parameters for determining a bad cps with a fluke meter ? Wonder if it may be a wire in the harness leading to cps.
