I have an 83 F100 with a SROD manual trans, I was wondering what is the best oil to put in there, Gear oil, or ATF? I live up in the colder climates of canada and I will be drivig it in the winter.
Always read the manual if you have one or hope someone on this website knows. Also sometimes there is a tag on the tranny that might specify fluid type.
A wild guess is that you need gear lube. I don't think ford manuals went with atf until the mid 80s and probably only for light duty. I am no expert so don't bet on my opinion.
In Canada I would probably go with a 75W90 or even better go with a synthetic.
The older 90W140 gear lubes are like peanut butter in freezing conditions and it can be hard to shift and may cause increased wear in cold climates.
The Ford standard transmission oil is an 80 wgt oil (not gear oil) that is only available from Ford dealers. Most dealers won't even stock it. Before I retired we were using and 80/90 synthetic that worked fine.
