Bed Rail Cap-Remove/Replace

Hello,

Is there a trick to remove the bed rail cap? Are they reusable or do they have to be replaced with a new one so it's not loose?

I changed my tailgate cap and the molded in clip teeth were gone by the time it came off. I bet the sides are the same.

When they repaint thee bed of my truck under warranty, they had to buy new rail caps as the "teeth" broke off when they tried to gently remove them.

Those are expensive pieces too... Even with the mark down. Which up here, is tough to find. Shipping eats away at it if I order from an out of state dealer.

Thanks for the reply.
I was trying to remove the bed rail cap to try and save myself some money. My passenger side has to be repaired and repainted this week. On my way home the other night the my dog kennel cover came loose and was flapping in the wind. I now have over 200 hundred dents/dings on the side of my bed from the zipper. I don't think if was flapping for more then 5 to minutes at the most before I noticed if.

I had a tie down strap come loose and it was slapping against the back tailgate. Luckily it didn't do any damage as it was only cloth.

Those caps and the cowl plastic are pieces I've always wanted to remove just to make it easier to treat with something to make them black again but I've not tried it. Too bad it doesn't appear easy.

I just had a small dent removed by a paint less dent/ hail person. He said he had to remove the bed rail cap to massage out the dent. I didn't watch him but it does seem to be back on and tight so I am guessing he did it
without doing any damage.

I was thinking a heat gun would soften up the sticky under the cap. I ran out of time before I had to drop it off for the repair.

Really makes me think about how to protect the sides and paint. I came across video of a truck that had been completely covered in bed liner X. Sure jets you to start thinking about whats out there for protection when you factor in the cost of repairs. This one cost me out of pocket over $1,300.

Funny that you mention line-x all over. I see that on occasion up here. With all the rock chips I now have, I can see WHY... and of course you don't have to clean, wax/polish it out either. I just call it, waiting to justify putting on road armour bumpers....

Some of the older trucks up here have bedliner up and over the side of the box. Protects from scratches but if you get a dent on top it'll still show. The plastic caps allow a hit and then the dent is hidden underneath if it's not too bad. The stick on aftermarket caps are likely cheaper than replacing with OE ones.

Steve, I didn't think they made stick on tailgate caps for the ford step tail gate? I thought just for the Chevy's. I had a Chevy and needed to replace the tailgate cap for a roll top cover and it came a "stick on" one.

Not that I know of. I was referring to the bed rail cap though, thought that was what this thread is about. My tailgate cap needs the left outer section replaced due to a couple of broken tabs. The tab method doesn't hold up very well, bumper cap is the same idea, much easier to install on the line though.

I may just pull mine off, remove the tabs and stick it back on with 3M red tape.

Gotcha Steve... Even the plastic lines on my factory side steps are like that. I would love to take them off to clean everything up once a season, but remove them once and you are done...

I'm not worrying about it. It's a truck, I use it as a truck. I am as careful as I can be, but stuff happens. Scraps on the plastic bed rails and tailgate caps are what those are for.

I was going to pull off the plastic on the side steps to buff out the scratches but probably more work than it's worth. My truck is just that too, it gets damaged/dented and I just drive on for the most part. When I backed into the concrete post I pulled most of it out. I got a NTO bumper as that's the most obvious damage. I've straightened most of the box side, just need to pull the flare off again and see if I can get the rest of the damage not too bad looking. I can't see spending 10% of the truck value to fix something that's cosmetic, when I looked into trading the dealer didn't even care about the damage when assigning a value to it and it looks better now than it did then.
