I'm shopping for an inexpensive (8k or less) used Subaru Impreza Outback and I have seen rust in places I wouldn't expect on a couple of them. I'm not sure if this is an issue or not. On the first one I found rust on the front feet of both seat rails on each seat. It was being flipped and the title seemed suspicious to me. The mechanic selling it said that he has seen this on a number of Outback's. Looked funny to me. This last car had rust on the front outside rail of the drivers seat and rust on the faces of belt pulleys. I didn't see any other signs of rust and the Auto Check report didn't show any flood damage and confirmed that it had been owned in Maryland away from water. I've worked on maybe 20 or so cars in my life. I don't remember ever seeing rust on any belt pulleys. Questions. Is this something I should be concerned about or am I over thinking things and has anyone heard of Outbacks having an issue with rust on the feet of the seat rails and or the belt pullies? Both cars are 2006.
google turns up about a billion hits for "Subaru outback rust problems", but the three I looked at were exterior, lower panel complaints, not what you are talking about. Best check the rest of it with a magnet and an ultrasound machine.
