I have a spare 1 or 2 PCM computers for each of my Ford's.
I buy them at salvage yards (or parted out a truck) and bring them home and plug them in to my trucks that have no problems to test them out. If they pass I check the caps inside of them and if they are leaking or look bad I replace them. Retest them and then if they pass store them where it is cool and dry or put them in a box to take with me if I go on a trip in the RV.
I have never payed more than #30.00 for one of them.
I keep a good one under the seat of my truck(in ziplock bag) also a good TFI modual too.
Already put it to use once when the PCM smoked leaving me on the side of the road.
As long as you get a PCM for your year truck with correct transmission programing, it will be plug and play. Must have a 10mm socket and ratchet to unplug the connector to PCM. As for the inner fender, its plastic and will bend down enough to get the PCM to slide out of the firewall
I have spare computer, distributor, coil, map sensor, tps, fuses all behind my reg cab seat. I also carry a frame fuel pump, not applicable to your truck....but that's everything that will keep it running if I'm out in the middle of nowhere.
