I am using my son's truck this week, 2012 F250, 120,000 miles or so. I left it running in the drive while I got something from inside the house. Guess it was idling approximately 10 minutes.
When I put it in reverse the transmission would not shift and the truck didn't move. I killed it, re-cranked it and it went in reverse.
As I was driving down the road the transmission would change gears up and down for no reason. I stopped the truck, and put it in park. I would put it in drive and the transmission sounded like it wanted to slip. I put it back in park and the transmission would not engage. I then killed the truck, re-cranked it, and it drove fine for awhile and started doing it again,
I kill the truck, re-crank it, and we go down the road.
RF, sorry for your troubles, Maybe your son knew he needed trans work and hoped you would get it fixed for him. Lol Just kidding.
Try a little more detailed info.
Did you ask him if he had been having issues ?
Did you check the fluid level, on a level surface ?
Did you look under the truck to see if anything looks out of place ?
Is the wrench Icon showing up on the dash ?
Do you have a way to check fault codes ?
My advice would be to not drive it if you know something isn't right.
Could be Torque Converter, Pump, Electrical.......
There is no wrench showing in the dash. I checked the fluid and it is good. I dont have a way to check codes. He lives with me, the truck has not had any problems since the fuel issues we had. I looked under it, everything looks good, dont see anything hanging or nothing out of place
Is the truck tuned? If so, reload the transmission tune. If not, go to the auto parts store and pull the codes or take it in. Might be a sticking solenoid. It may still have codes even if the light is off on the dash.
It was tuned when the truck was deleted. We are having flooding here in Louisiana. My son n law said the wiring to the transmission could have got wet and is causing an open circuit? IDK.
He said for me to get a blow dryer and dry the wiring harness around the transmission. I will try that once it stops this incessant rain
Well drying the electrical wires to the transmission didn't help. I found out the truck has 7 solenoids, but don't know which one is bad, and the nearest transmission shop is 65 miles away.
I am so disgusted with this thing. I wish he had never bought it. It has been nothing but trouble.
Reload the tuning. Check for codes. Otherwise, park it in the bad part of town with a hundred dollar bill on the dash. Might even be able to part it out.
I work at a diesel shop. The only problems I've seen and heard is that the front pump seal blows and there's a bearing in the front that goes bad as well
My 2012 has been a work horse. It is mostly used to tow heavy. I have to say it been the best heavy duty truck I have owned.
The solenoids are easy to replace if you know which one. All new vehicles are computer control and have issues like this. Stuff made in china does not have long life.
I hate to say it but his truck is tuned and deleted it is possible he trashed the trans. Some of those tunes are crazy powerful. What kind of tune was he running? Which tuner? Where did the tune come from?
This truck wasn't tuned or anything. It was just a bone stock dually. The company that owns the truck isn't very nice to there equipment. They haul oversized loads and do little to no maintenance until it breaks.

I'm confused. The OP says the truck was tuned and deleted. Are you referring to the same truck, or a different one?
