I have a 2000 F-250, V-10. It stars fine and reves fine in park or nutreal, but when you put it into Drive, it kills the engine. It goes just fine in reverse also. This just happened tonight on my way to work. Now it's parked on the side of the road till morning. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, still haven't figured out my problem with this thing, but here's more info for hopefully some ideas. Haven't had any cel's, but I did have the overdrive on/off lighting up once last week. The engine runs fine in park, reverse, and nutreal. But as soon as I put it in drive, the engine dies. I've checked all the tranny fluids, fuses and such with nothing. I'm going to get a scanner and see if there's any stored codes that might give me a clue what's going on with this truck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Have you tried to unhook the battery with the headlight switch on
and let it sit for 30 minutes. That should clear all the memory and
start you off scratch and re-learm your driving style. That may
work is it a software problem. If it is mechanical then your going to
need a scanner that can talk to the transmission.
Get it moved off the side of the road so some jerk does not do it
dammage or steal items.
Please comeback and let us know what the problem turned out to be.

The 4R100 doesn't learn . The 5R110W does (2005+ trucks).
And Sgt is right, I have the 4R100, and it doesn't learn. I have already tried disconnecting the battery, checked all fluid levels, even the blinker resevior..lol I'm thinking one of the sensors is going crazy or something. Like the TRS, VSS, or the like. Could even be a short somewhere. I'm going to take it in and let the experts hook it up and see if they can track it down, then go from there. I enjoy working on most anything, but I'm not into throwing money at my truck until I fix it. More to come!!!
Idles like a champ, goes into reverse just fine, but as soon as you put it into drive, it kills the engine. Even goes up through the rpm's just fine when in park.

That's true for diesels, but we're talking about a V10 here. The 4R100 in the V10 did get learning somewhere along the line. I don't know which year.
Having said that, all the learning does is learn a pressure adjustment to keep the shifts from getting too harsh or too soft. It can't learn anything that could cause a stall in drive.
The only way a transmission can cause a stall is if the torque converter were to lock when the truck isn't moving. Low pressure is the most common reason for the torque converter to lock when it should be unlocked.
I recommend installing a pressure gauge in the test port and watch the pressure when the transmission is shifted into drive. I suspect pressure will dip low, which allows the converter to drift on, stalling the engine. If that is what is happening most likely a seal has failed inside the trans.
Ok, so I got a call from the dealer today. They're saying rebuild or buy a new tranny. Apparently a valve body is sticking and causing the torque converter to lock. Said the trans fluid is burnt. So the question is? Do I bring it home and drain it, put a new filter, and see if it solves this, or take their advise and rebuild? I can't afford a new one, and can't afford their rebuild price ( starting at @ $2800) but I can rebuild it myself alot cheaper. Have a friend that'll prolly help me and he worked in a tranny shop for years. Is a valve body something that's easy to replace? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
