Sometimes it is best to walk away for a day or 2 then get at it again.

I think it is time to find a tap and being vary careful clean the threads.
Maybe before you chase the threads take a can of air like used to on computers unless you have air and blow out any dirt and crap in the hole. Then run the tap down to clean it and blow it out again.

I second Dave on the break ... A different frame of mind can always help!

If you get a Starter tap (tapered end), and gently work in it by hand keeping it straight as you keep slowly working it in will increase your chance of getting it back into the original threads.

Only turn it with a handle if you know you are in the original threads ... Be careful, be diligent.

-Enjoy

Yep 1/8th or even 1/16th a turn in at a time and then back out.

And be vary careful as the tap can break easily and then you would be screwed big time.

I second Festus' second of Dave. Does that make it squared? Or would it just be a third?

Also, have you tried a different bolt? I haven't seen that mentioned yet.
