OK So for some time I have noticed play in the wheel and it slowly over the last 5 yrs or so has gotten a little worse. Not so bad you can't drive it but enough that it is starting to concern me.
Well as timing would have it, we are moving to our new place this week and YEAH!! I have a shop again.
Anyway...time for steering work. It has been 8 yrs since I replaced the ball joints so I will be doing that again.
My questions are...
1 - Other than the ball joints, anything else? It comes with the C Clip, ball joint, castle nut etc. But if I remember right, I also need new outer axle seals.
....Anything else?
2 - I am betting the play is the steering box. I have snugged it down a little about 3 times over the years, but I think it is beyond an adjustment.
Recommendations on Brand?
think i need to do that as well.. steering is a bit loose at high speed, small inputs take too long to correct direction.
when you loosen the lock nut do you turn the center bolt clockwise or tighter or the other way. how much did you turn the adjustment screw, 1/4 or less turn.
Each time I would do it about 1/4 turn, test drive, another turn test drive etc. Only took a couple of turns to snug it up a bit but you don't want to go to far.
You will feel the wheel "binding" and not wanting to return to straight on its own. Then I would back it off 1/8 turn.
Plus all the joints in the tie rods can develop slop. Worth doing a thorough inspection to narrow down the problems. Or show that ya need a full front end kit.
Another vote for Redhead if you need a steering box.
Dana Spicer ball joint kit 2020314 comes with all seals and O rings.
Tie rods are cheap. Do them with lifetime warranty. If you have a lift, get a drop pitman arm. It helps keep things the way they were meant to work.
Ball joins can seem ok but can bind. If you have a dolly for wheels then you can pop off a tie rod and see if you can turn wheel by hand while not jacked up. We do this up north on ice in winter.
I did inner & outer tie rods ends, Center link, end links, idler arm, sway bar, and track bar all within the last year. Was hoping to stave off the expensive part but... Oh well.
OK So Red Head for the steering box. Time to shop

Came to post this. I did Moog's and they are working fine however the spicer kit would have made it far simpler.

Same rule applies for tightening. Righty tighty, lefty loosey.
I ordered a Redhead gearbox in a FTE group buy (to get a good discount) and the gearbox is the only difference from the last video and the following one - on the same day.

That looks like Green Mountain Reservoir area!
The first video is where mine is now. And my front end looks about as spankin new as yours did too. Hopefully the red Head will do it right.
Redhead steering box gets my vote as well. Spent a lot of $$$ on everything else first with little change. Redhead box and all is well. BTW, the Redhead is the only truly rebuilt box available that I have ever heard of. Most all of the others are from South of the border and are "rebuilt" with marginally "in spec" parts from used boxes.

Welllll, don't forget, Redheads are built on used boxes too, they just do them better!
