In a previous post, it came to light that my turbo might need rebuilding or replacement. From this comes 3 questions.
1-Is a turbo rebuild possible for a home mechanic with limited experience or should I just replace it?
2-I only plan on running a chip, cool air intake, 3" downpipe when I am finished getting the things I need. Is it work upgrading the turbo (or the fan)? I don't hot rod it, but I do want power there when I need it.
3-Does anyone have any links to sites that sell turbo stuff for a 1997 model and any specific suggestions?
Its not a bad job, but this is the guy you want to use http://stores.ebay.com/Rons-Turbo-Service-801-842-9186 you get more than enough parts for rebuilding you turbo in the rebuild kit. Including upper and lower pedestal o-rings. The price is much cheaper and he ships fast. If you wanna upgrade your turbo a 1.00a/r exhaust housing is good, about 155.00 from beans diesel.

These turbo's are extremely easy to rebuild. Its actually about 5 time harder to get the turbo off the truck than it is to rebuild them. If all your plans entail for your truck is a chip then your stock turbo will be fine. A rebuild kit for them is only $100 so you aren't committed to your stock turbo for life if you do rebuild it.
He is not a supporter of FTE like Bean but his parts, prices and service are the best I have seen. Ever! His phone number is listed in his auction. I called him 3 or 4 times and he picked up the phone everytime. He gave me great advice and worked with me on what I needed. I had a toasted turbo. I was hoping for a rebuild kit but after I told him the damage he said I should get a rebuilt turbo as mine was too far gone. Called around for parts and he was right. It would have cost me to rebuild mine than to buy a rebuilt unit from him.
I have to agree with Tim on this one. If your gonna go rebuild, go with Ron. IMO, Bean cant compete with his low prices and quality care when it comes to these kits. Bets of luck!
Thanks guys. I am going to try the guy at Ebay. I just didn't know if I was capable of the job or not or if I should try turbo or fan to get faster response and low end torque (which I do use a lot). I don't think the turbo is damaged bad. It just causes the truck to shutter if I accelerate hard until it passes about 2200 RPM. Jeremey here at FTE said he had the same symptons and it was the problem.
FTE has the best and most helpful members I have ever seen or heard of.
Thanks very much!
