William, how hard was it to rebuild yours? What tools are needed? My wheel is starting to get a little chipped and it has a little more play than I would like.
It might just need a new wheel... I really can't afford a $600 turbo right now. And if I were to go that route I'd buy the modified TP38 from Comp for $850
evan do it yourself!!! you do not need to have it rebalanced unless it ate a bolt or something. it is EXTREMELY easy to rebuild, i have a few pictures some were... its litterally about...8? 16pt bolts and it slides apart, wam bam done slam it back in. if i find them pictures ill pm you them
FWIT i spend 180 shipped from ron with a new impellor wheel and rebuilt kit.
Yes evan, do it yourself. I did and sent my parts in to get balanced as it is recommended. He did some grinding in places to balance it. It's free to balance, just the cost of shipping to him and back. Mine was just like yours, a little chip and a little play.
I had a total of $95 in my rebuild, including compressor wheel. The hardest part is getting the turbo in and out and the rebuild is super easy. I found a new compressor wheel and rebuild on ebay. The person I got the kit from offers free balancing of the rotating assembly, all you have to do is pay for shipping. There is a lot of rebuild kits on ebay for our turbos but only a few offer free balancing.
hell thats more than what mine could do before and after the rebuild and with out the intercooler! haha
ron said to me no point in balancing it unless there was damage to turbo, although it is recommended, can never be too sure. well atleast im pretty sure he did, its been 8 months LOL
Maybe by the time I get around to it I can afford that modified TP38. Sounds like it's just as good as the D66, but about $500 cheaper... and I like that it has 360* oiling for the bearing.
I'm just sharing the information that I found out though experience.
TJ and all the other guys on here told me to buy a rebuilt one, not rebuild it myself, and i didn't listen. 500 dollars later, I have a turbo I think is good.
Coulda spent 100 more dollars and had a turbo with no hassles.
My turbo was screwed up when I rebuilt it, worn center shaft, bad impeller.
I could still hit 30+ psi.
Brand new parts failed from rebuild.
OEM parts that are good.
Why?
Cause the bearing hub was bad. Looked just fine.
I posted pictures of the bearings on here.
It was screwed.
Ron sent me another bearing section and 2 new bearings.
