It's time I start doing research a bit earlier than when I'm ready to tackle a project. I'm wasting more time waiting on parts to come in the mail in between stages of repair & maintenance than I am on anything else. I'll try to get ahead of it this time.
I want to add the 2nd tank back into our F-350. The PO had taken the tank off a LONG time ago, so I am guessing he's been driving around as an occasional use ranch truck for 6+ years with it gone. He did have it very well sealed in heavy plastic & duct taped shut.
The spare tire was missing when I bought it and the 2nd tank itself was long gone along with the two metal support straps. So the fun work of getting anything out is already done.
I was hoping I would find the sending unit at least but no joy.
So, what am I going to need? I made some selections here based on my limited knowledge. Please critique & make recommendations as appropriate.
- electrical connectors?
- replacements for any of the hoses?
- is that old brown cylinder an inline filter?
- replacement filler tube?
- any other gaskets / seals etc?
The filler tube from the body wall is ancient but appears to not be crumbling. Not sure where it has to connect to quite yet so I can't determine its suitability re: length.
Tools
- fuel line disconnect tool in case I have to detach again. What size do I need?
I'd love to get parts recommendations as well as parts vendors recommendations. If you provide a link I'll check it out.
Anything else I might need? I have no idea if the tank switch in the cab actually toggles, but the truck did run fine on the front tank when switched to that one.
Also, the OD of the fuel lines measured .333" with my micrometer. I'm gonna take a stab that means my fuel lines are 1/4" line since 5/16" would have an ID of 0.3125"
I also found a really helpful video for this process. It's for the front tank but it shows the sending unit, electronics, pump etc in detail. Adding it here for my reference.
