Alternative method to remove fan clutch - sawzall?
I have an 86 f150, 4.9l. - Right hand thread. I am in the process of replacing the water pump Abe crankshaft pulley. Radiator is removed.b
The fan clutch bolt is completely rounded off and I am trying to figure out how im the world I can proceed on my work.
The fan is right hand threaded. I tried to use the specialized removal tool and it bent up around where it came into contact with the bolt. I then tried to chisel it free with a 3lb mallet and a long chisel. All that seems to accomplish is making deep indentations and further destroying the bolt.
I am not opposed to getting a sawzall at this point. I don't have air so air chisels are out of the question. This thing is fused on here!
What else can be done? Where do I cut?

I would like to see a picture of what you are trying to get off.
I ask because all the clutch part of the fan is bolted to the water pump with 4 nuts.
Once off the pump you unbolt the fan from the clutch part, move old fan to new clutch part and bolt it back to water pump.
BTW if you have been beating on this clutch with it on the pump on the motor buy a new pump as you have beating on the pump bearings & seal and that is not good.

You may have to pull the radiator for access to remove the pump/clutch/fan assembly.

I think I would continue with trying to split the nut (maybe with a better hardened chisel) being as how the water pump is going to need replaced, given the hammering it's taken so far. I looked for a open "C" style nut splitter but it seems they only go to 3/4". Maybe apply some heat, then chisel.

Have you tried a nut splitter? I've had good luck with them. I'm not sure you can get one in there though.
