Had alot of windshield time yesterday, and that always means thinking. As stated in my sig, I drive an 06 1500 for a work truck. It has 250,000 mile on it and so the need for a new truck is on my mind. My idea yesterday was to get a dent and build it into a work truck.
So, the needs. I drive a decent amount of miles a year. So obviously something reliable. It needs to get decent mileage, 15 or higher. It will be on the highway so needs to be able to do 70 without running at 9000 RPM's. I do not haul alot, but do have a contractor topper with ladder rack that would fit a short bed.
My way of thinking right now. A f100 or 150 with a 300 and od tranny, maybe a 5 speed. Short box. Amenities are simple, a/c and cruise. Possibly a 302.
Budget will be somewhere around $5000 - $6000. This will need to be all inclusive. Give me your ideas and opinions, specifically those with experience with power trains getting decent mileage.
Look around for a parts truck that has as much of the parts, drivetrain and suspension upgrades that you'll be needing, might even get a newer interior in the deal and will help keep costs down. Ugly trucks are cheap trucks.
I think gas, kind of forgot about the 4bt, but if it costs anywhere near what a 6bt cost, it would blow the budget. I might just start with my parts truck, but it is a long bed. Would have to find a new topper. And it has a really rough body. I don't mind driving ugly, but for the business it needs to look decent.
How about a 240 six...?
Or even a 250 six from a mustang...? It's lighter.
My last engine build was a 200 cuin six with milled head (9,5 compr.) 3 angle valve cut , Comp cam 260, headers, Weber 2bbl carb. It was quicker than a stock 289 and did get me 20+ mpg as well. It was not in a F100 but in a 65 stang though. But a mild 250 will do in a light SB work truck.
