so my 84 f150 has an open diff with 3.73 gears and i don't like that it's an open diff. what should i put in there a locker, LSD or what?? now i do tow a small utility trailer with lawn equipment or just stuff for people from time to time i just don't want to get stuck in someone's back yard or my own.

Got money ... New Locker's or LSD's are not cheap. You are looking at $600 or more!

Personally, I'd stick a Eaton Tru-Trac in it.

Here's a link to a thread I have in the Off-Road forum on the pros and cons of different traction aiding differentials: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post15935996. A lot of info there (if you like drinking from a fire hose!)

Personally, if it was me I'd put a lunchbox locker in it. It's cheap and very effective. The main downside is that it has some handling quirks that I might not want to make teenage drivers (or my wife) deal with. But I've driven rear locker-equipped vehicles on the road (including in the snow) and I'm willing to put up with the quirks for the positive performance.

The other downside is that lockers are significantly less than ideal for towing. They make it very hard to get started around a corner without a lot of tire squealing. But for the light trailers than an F-150 should be towing I'd still go with a lunchbox locker.

If you want to avoid those downsides, I'd definitely go with a Truetrac.

Or if you want a locker but want to spend more money than a lunchbox, a full-carrier automatic locker (like a Detroit) is certainly stronger (but a lunchbox will generally hold up fine in most applications), or a selectable locker (like an ARB) can give you the best of both worlds, but with the hassle of having to turn it on and off as you need it to be there or not.

Then I would use the Eaton True Trac.
