Truck has 45k miles on it. I took it recently to dealer for a service where they have done all of them. When I get home and file my paperwork I notice on the receipt they put in 5w-20 oil instead of 15w-40. The oil part # is not listed in the manual. The next day I am sitting there when they are open. I showed receipt to SA and he tried to pass the buck saying ticket was entered wrong. I insisted they change oil and filter. I also got an alignment done since there was a pull after a blowout. 2 hours later I pay and notice on receipt no indication they changed the oil. I questioned and they said it was a shop charge. Is this a possibility? I drove about 30 miles with possibility of wrong oil. Will that hurt anything in the long run?
One time, I had my big rig serviced (Cat 3406C engine), and afterwards I could smell gear lube real strong.......well, I had driven about 250 miles, and the shop manager called told me that the mmechanic had inadvertantly opened a drum of gear lube and hooked it up to the motor oil pump!! And to get it changed outright away on their dime. There did not seem to be any adverse effect for the remainder of the time I had the truck. If I remember correctly, it had around 750,000 miles on it when I traded trucks again!
I wouldn't worry about the gas oil in a diesel but, 80-90 gear lube....
I know that's not good for it. Had a friend that tried it on a small block "Once"
Engine got hot quick and ended up trashing the mains and rods.
I agree with Don that you're likely fine... as long as they actually changed it out and put in the correct oil.
I am sure they changed oil. It is nagging me that they would not give me a ticket for it because it was absorbed as shop charges. I send all samples to Blackstone so maybe they can verify.
If you had a Fumoto drain valve you could grab a sample right now and send it off to Blackstone. Otherwise, you have to wait until the next oil change.
I would have spray painted the oil filter before taking it back to make sure they actually changed it out.
I would be pissed and paranoid. Still, 5w-20 isn't going to cause any problems short term.
There's a silver lining to this: Your engine oil should be squeaky clean after two oil changes in a short period of time.

Insist on a work voucher for proof of the mistake should a warranty issue pop up later. Don't think your truck was hurt but CYA is the golden rule.
