02 V6, burning oil. Is this normal? I checked today, about 1500 km since last oil change, about a liter gone, last time I checked was 4000 after previous oil change, same thing 1l gone.
Is this normal for those duratecs to do this?
So one time is went 4,000 km and burned 1l, and this time it went 1500km and burned another liter. 1500 X .62 = 930 miles. Not good. Check the brand and viscosity of the lube installed. Check for leaks & drips. The 3.0 is not noted for being an oil burner. Check also the PCV valve for proper operation.

We use a little bit in ours but it does have 256,000 miles on it. And when I say a little I mean when I change oil and filter the oil is at the top of the dip stick hatch marks. 4000 miles later it is at the bottom- half quart i think it is.
I also have a small leak somewhere on the passengers side of the engine.
Maybe look under and around the engine area for a leak.
our 07 used to use oil at those same rates. turned out to be the oil used. the motor for some odd reason if it had a full dyno based oil 5w20 would use a qt every 750 miles, if we used motorcraft semi blend use 1 qt between the 5k changes , being a vw audi tech at a dealer i would come home with german spec 5w40 castrol syntech, it used NO OIL at all never had a flow problem on cold start, ran it to 100k when we traded it in for a 2013.
i wasn't alone i tryed it on 3 other escapes around my home on side jobs useing oil,all reacted the same way, 100% syntech no oil useage. my personall thoughts are oil break down due to the high heats the newer motors run at. heat! that is something that full syntechs handle way better then dyno based oil.
Your are not burning oil, you are using oil, there is a difference. Do you see blue bellowing smoke coming out of your exhaust? If so you are burning oil in a bad way.
I have a 2003 3.0 with 156K and USE about a quart and half between oil changes (4000 mile interval). No blue smoke or any smoke from the exhaust. The oil is being used to lubricate the engine. Some of it dissipates because of the high heat of the engine and low viscosity of the oil being used. 5w-20 is almost like water. I wouldn't worry about it and just add oil when it gets low. You never mentioned the mileage on the 2002 Escape.
I think the heat comment is right on the money. Oil can vaporize and get fed to the PCV system, and you'll never see a whiff of blue smoke. I was told by an aircraft engine designer that if you see blue smoke, it is burning a LOT of oil. Synthetic handles heat better than mineral oil. It was designed to do that, as engineers found that the heat in turbines was degrading mineral too quickly and synthetic was created to handle that situation.
My v6 gets so hot that a short trip to warm the engine prior to an oil change, 5 miles up and 5 miles back on the interstate got the oil so hot the mechanic commented as he loosened the filter. On the other hand, a Ranger with a 2.3 didn't get the oil significantly warmed up after a 15 mile drive. It was warm, but not so hot I couldn't fish the drain plug out of the pan by hand.
