Quick question on factory tach
I know that I need to get the IP cover from the do error vehicle for the tach sensor, but do I need the entire pump or just the cover? Is there anything else to grab (I'm getting the entire gauge cluster)?
I realize I should have asked these questions well before now, but this one kind of fell in my lap this morning and couldn't resist.

DO NOT pull the IP gear cover without first removing the IP gear from the IP ... That means pull the IP first, then the cover. See below.
NEVER ALLOW the IP Gear to become unmeshed with it's mate or you will have great difficulty getting the IP gear re-timed with it's mate.
I assume your current IP gear cover has no Tach Sensor port, you will need only the cover and sensor.
Here is the basics for doing an IP gear cover reseal, it will also work for the gear cover change out.
Unplug IP wires.
Rotate Motor to TDC #1.Remove #1 Glow Plug.
DO NOT Place Finger over Glow Plug hole, hold a piece of paper over it!
Bump motor over until you feel air forced out.
Hand turn motor to TDC. (Harmonic Balancer mark and Pointer)
If you go past TDC, Do not rotate motor backwards, Rotate motor TWO revolutions by hand to TDC. (It's a slack thing)
Unhook Throttle linkage.
Remove Throttle Return spring.
Remove Throttle linkage bracket.
Unplug High Idle Solenoid wire.
Remove High Idle Solenoid.
Unhook Return Line on IP.
Remove Fuel Supply line.
Unhook Injection lines at the Injectors.
Remove Oil Filler Neck. (or IP gear bolt access cover)
Remove the three 12 point bolts holding drive gear to IP.
Take note of the IP Static timing marks between top of IP and Gear cover. (Or put a mark between them)
Remove the three nuts holding the IP to Gear cover.
Remove IP.
Remove 4 bolts holding the cover.
Remove Cover.WARNING !!! DO NOT ALLOW THE IP GEAR to disengage from the Cam gear! BE CAREFUL!
Make two marks on the IP gear at the block surface (one on each side) just in case the gear gets moved. At this point the gear will be resting on one side or the other of the block.
It is safe to CAREFULLY ROLL the gear to the other side. Ensure you do not separate it from it's mate, kept it meshed!
Clean the half opposite of the gear, carefully roll gear over to the clean side, clean the other side.
Clean up block and IP gear cover 100% OIL FREE ... Cleanliness is pretty much everything in a good, long lasting seal!
Apply 1/16" bead of Permatex Ultra Grey to the center of the sealing surface and around the bolt holes.NOTE! I prefer NON Sillycone Semi-drying sealants, I use Yamabond 4.
Permatex HighTack Gasket maker is good stuff as well, Although a nightmare to cleanup next time.
I hate HighTack for that reason.
Set IP cover and tighten to specs.
Reverse steps for assembly.
-Enjoy

Unfortunately the motor is already kind of disassembled so not sure I would be able to find TDC in the first place. But if I can just get the cover and sensor then worry about reinstalling it on mine correctly, then I will shoot for that.
Thanks for the quick response.

Your motor is partially disassembled?
On your motor you pulled the IP and IP gear cover all in one?

No on the donor motor that I getting the tach from, they had already pulled the IP off the motor, and come to find out they had already removed the cover by the time I git7there. Does this screw me up in the end?

Whew, Thank goodness ... No you are fine, just don't pull your motor apart with out following the simple techniques.
It doesn't matter how the donor was pulled apart. (at least to you)

Good, I was a little concerned there for a minute, thinking I just threw away a couple bucks on a paperweight.
I plan on swapping out the tach and the odometer (newer one has the trip meter) do I need to swap the entire printed paper circuit board? I would assume that mine '84 probably doesn't have any connections as it didn't come with the tach. I need to spend some more time searching the forum, but haven't had much luck yet.

There are threads on the cluster change, I forget all the ins and outs.
Someone that does know will be along with that info I'm sure.
