Steering gear adjustment

I'm really at a loss right now. My steering wheel had quite a bit of play in it which I figured out was the shaft and I have ordered a new one. But before I realized that, I adjusted the sector gear screw which I have done before and now the wheel is too tight even after adjusting it back out there is no change at all. No matter where I turn the screw all the way out or in the wheel is tight enough that stay turned about a quarter of the way in each direction. Meaning while I'm driving, if I change lanes, the wheel will stay right where it is when I let go and veer right off the road. What did I do wrong? Did I damage something by adjusting it too much? I only drove it about 40 miles total today after the adjustment. Is something damaged? Or do I need to keep messing with it to get it right? It used to be really smooth and comfortable to turn. Now it's stiff and awkward. Please advise.

Is it possible you adjusted it too tight and broke something internal to the gear box?

Do NOT mess with that nut! It only sets the preload of the sector shaft. Overtighten it, the box could lock up.

Backing the nut off if this occurs...may not solve the problem.

Yeah I think that's what happened. It's bad now. Tight all the time no matter how I adjust it. I tried to back it off but there was no change. It actually just kept getting worse. Like scary on the freeway!

New gear box on the way.

I just wish I knew exactly what happened. I like to have an understanding of the components. I saw a bunch of videos about getting the slack out of the steering that way but I guess it's very critical how much is allowed. Live and learn and buy more parts! New pitman arm as well and now I have a whole new steering system minus the pump. This truck needed it anyway. Thanks guys!
