Hello everyone, I have a 97' Expedition, I've had it since 2004 and have never cleaned the engine, it's pretty dusty and I belived after so many years an engine wash it's deserved.
I have read about Expedition running bad after engine wash, so I wanted to know is there any way to wash the engine without damaging anything?
Should I clean it with a cloth or is it ok to hose everything but the middle top part of the engine and just cloth clean that?
The problem is the result of water getting past the ignition coil that sits on top of every spark plug with the 5.4L engines. In 97 there was a 4.6L that had coil packs and spark plug wires. If yours is the latter then an engine wash is not a problem.
Then you have to be careful about not spraying water directly at the COPs, or you have to wait until it's time to change the spark plugs. That's when you can wash it, pull the COPs and blow the water out of the spark plug wells, change the plugs, and then put it all back together.
Another two questions, my expedition is missing the oil cooler, my mechanic said it's not that important, I live in a warm place, 95°F 35°C avg, is it too bad?
And I've experience lower mpg, I put 6 galons every week or week and half depending how much I use the truck, I use the truck 3 to 5 times a weeks for runs of no more than 3 to 6 miles, for me it doesn't seem right.
Could it be the hot weather or should take it for a check?
