Ok iv got the old one off and ready to install new one. How do I make sure I get every thing lined up right? I and getting ready to pull the pitman arm off the old one and wanna make sure I get everything lined up. Will I have to et a alinghment after I am done? Thanks guys
An alignment is not neccessary provided that... you dont need one now. There should be a blind spline on the pit. Im 99% sure the steering shaft is the same way...
if it is not... turn the steering gear allllllllll the way to one side. counting the turns turn it all the way to the other side. divide this num and turn it opposite way that number. it is now centered.
as long as your tires were centered on tear down you will be ok there. as for the steering wheel, the splines are so that if its off a tooth one way or the other you can see it in the wheel. just take it off and re-install one tooth the other way....
Good luck.... Why did you change this gear if you dont mind me asking
Do you know if it has a blind spline? if it does then no worries. attach it centered, then attach the steering wheel centered, then just turn the wheel to attach the pitment atm to the tierod/ drag link actually.
if it has no blind spline do it the same way but backwards, raise the front end, center the tires by pushing them in place. attach the pitment arm loosely to the drag link/ tie rod. attach steering gear centered and raise the pitment up and slide it on. if it wont go on mark it with a paint pen so you can undue it from the drag link and attach it.
when you get it all together, to bleed the system. Make sure you raise the front end, and turn the wheel lock to lock before you turn the engine on. check and refill the resevoir after every cycle. when you get no more air, then start the engine, and turn lock to lock, doing the same thing with the resevoir. at any time you get frothy foam, turn the motor off and start from the begining.
awsome, thanks. I found white marks on the gear box. to line up that was already on there. I am 99% sure this will fix the problem. I called ford and told them what was going on. I could littlerly whip the whell and it would turn left are right with ease. Ans like I siad when you make a left are right turn and you know how the whell woill strightn up, well she just stayed to the left or right side and wouldnt correct. Does it soulnd like it would be this to you? The gear box?
A blind spline is an alignment spline (one big) to time, or clock the pitment arm in the right spot the first time. well those four big splines will do the same thing, but with a small margin for error. just center the gear, match up the pitment arm where it looks like it should be if the wheels were centered. connect the steering wheel then turn it till it matches up with the draglink. you will be fine.
Yes what you describe can very well be the steering gear fault, I cant promice it is over the internet thow
