460 newbie questions.

I'm new to the game. I've got some experience with FSB engines but my primary focus has been diesel throughout my life. I would like to learn more about gas engines. I'm going to be building a 460 for my 65 F100. I got a lot of negative feed back from my Chevy friends about the unreliability of BBF engines. I tuned them out and did my own research. From what u have seen these guys are dead wrong. I've seen build after build of 500 to 700hp 460s with stock bottom ends. So I come here for schooling.

I'd like a street strip build. This truck won't be a daily driver, but I'd still like to be able to drive it to work and run around on the weekends. It's going to be some what of a budget build. My brother inlaw is the head machinist at an engine machine shop. I'm thinking 60 over bore, forged pistons, serious cam, Wieland high rise dual carb intake & dual 650 double pumpers(not because I need them but mainly because it looks awesome), and a fresh C6 with a stall.

I haven't bought an engine yet, so are there certain years more desirable then others? Any suggestions on what I've listed so far?

This here is a "cook book" of sorts for 460 builds. Note how far up the power scale they stick with stock lower ends. I hate to send you to another site but this is the "best" thing I've seen. Remember, ymmv and these are all serving suggestions:

Yes sir I found that recipe. I tried to start an account over there but in ts been a few days and I still haven't been activated yet.

Is this the right place to have posted this thread? I thought I would have gotten more feed back by now.

I would suggest upgrading the rods of you want some security. Stock rods are good to about 6500 rpm but will support good horsepower still that point. With that dual quad carb setup, you are going to have plenty of air. Choose a cam that is tolerable for the street but is still going to be enough for that engine. I've don't have a preference on brands but get some valvesprings that are good enough for the cam you choose.

Thanks for the feed back. I'll definitely do some research on cams.

Cool thread, Im in a nearly identical spot. 1975 Camper Special i got for a song is getting upgraded heavily. It came with a nice running stock 390. Im almost convinced to buy one of these 460s in the classified section and make something very cool with it in my time off. I have 25 years as a marine engineer, assisting mechanics on rebuilds from time to time. It should be interesting to see how the skillsets combine. This truck will be my ride for whatever time im home, but hardly a daily driver as well.
Itll be very cool to see how yours progresses. It looks like we are looking for many of the same answers. Cheers!

With that much power, you need to be able to stop. A power disc brake upgrade would be a good start. Looking forward to seeing your progress. Good luck.

I wouldn't bore anymore then what is needed to clean up the block. .060 over is doable but if there is any core shift in the block you can wind up with a thin spot. And then it will never cool right. These ole big blocks can make a ton of horsepower without going over size.

I wouldn't bore it anymore than it needs to go. There is no appreciable power gain from .030 to .060 overbore and out at .060 you can bet the bores are getting thin. Dual 650 dp carbs are going to be a bear to get tuned in, it is just too much carburation for a stock stroked street big block. I would use a Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap manifold with a 3310 750 Holley. Have a set of downleg boosters put in the carb with a rear metering block kit and do some jetting. IMO that's as good as it gets for street carburation.
Have you considered a stroker kit ? that's where your money would be well spent.
