So...I have low oil pressure in my 390 engine on my 75 F250 after it was rebuilt and I discovered that the "ford reputable" machine shop left out the oil plug that is in the distributor passage. My questions are has anyone installed one of these with the engine still in the truck? If so, how to do you go about doing it and what size is the plug? Is is the screw in type or is it the press in kind? I don't see any threads in the hole. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think now I'm going to pull the timing cover and possibly the intake to make sure nothing else was missed.
Is this the plug you're talking about?
If so, it's a press in plug, kinda like a "mini" freeze plug. I think they're 7/16" but not 100% sure on that.
As for replacing it. I would remove timing cover, timing set, distributor. That will give you access. See if you can stuff a rag down the distributor hole below the plug. Then take a long punch or steel rod with a tip small enough to fit just inside of the cup. Coat the outside of the plug with #2 Permatex, and fill the inside of the cup with a heavy grease. This will help keep the plug from falling off of the punch. Insert the punch into the greased cup and install the plug.
That is definitely the one and thanks for your reply! Do you know if the outer hole on the face of the block where you have box around has to be plugged too? I'm thinking this might be the issue with my low oil pressure.
I only had about 5 psi at 1000 rpm. Luckily I didn't run the engine that much before I noticed and potentially damaged anything else. Already have everything off in the front and heading out to get freeze plug. Thanks!
