Trailer Running Lamp Inoperable?

My neighbor said his trailer lamps stopped working. He found an internet fix. Which was to tap the license plate lamp for them.

So, I said that's not a safe fix. So, he brought it over for "us to work on it together". - Love it when that happens.

Feels like temp.... 103*F with Sun and little shade. Cold front coming through the area this weekend.... 97*F, seriously.

Anyway, one thing I notices was you guys are great at, posting fixes. So, with my daughters help, and a 7 year old I made the attachment for anyone with an issue.

I have downloaded about 100 when I find them. Just trying to "give back".

I don't spell well, I definitely don't take photo's well as I just got my first smart phone in May

Say what you want. My feeling left me years ago after 3 girls!

The truck and the trailer lights are on two different fuses. Mitt check them first. I had one side not working but the truck did. Found the fuse and all was good. Mine was under the hood, e99.

Hey pirschwagon, I just wanted to let you know that there is a mighty fine write up and will help someone. I didn't get the chance to log in yesterday or would have told you sooner. Thanks for your contribution!

Nice write up. I like the electrical tape on a socket trick. Thanks.

That is an interesting way of doing this.

I had to do this repair about a month ago and chose to abandon all of the factory wiring and simply install a separate in cab rocker switch with an under hood relay with a fused line directly from a 12v+ source. I ran 16ga 4 lead wire from front to back as I may add some "on demand" reverse lights to my trailers in the future. I debated on having the 12v+ originate from a "key on" source.

What are your thoughts?

nothing worse than leaving the lights on and finding the battery dead

Yes, I thought about that. However, due to the fact that they are all LEDs at this point, after doing the math, I think it would take more than a week to kill the battery and I am never connected to the same trailer that long. If they were incandescent lights, then it might be more of a concern.

With a run that long, you may want to use a relay and a higher amperage circuit. Keep the fuse in the switch circuit as well. They are pre-wired for reverse laps already. I think it's the center pin in the 7-Pin connector.

Where should I add the additional relay? How many amps? The run is about 16'.

You are correct, they are already pre-wired for the reverse lamps. However, with trailers as long as 40', I would like to have illumination at the rear of the trailer that is independent of the truck having to be in gear whilst in reverse. So, I will tap into that center pin in the 7-pin. Or am I missing something?
