I do a transmission flush every 30K. have had truck since 22k and now it has 180k. No transmission issues (6.0 cooler). I have never dropped the pan or changed the transmission filter. Have looked at pics of a very crusty transmission magnets on other transmissions...
Question: Would you drop your transmission pan just to clean the magnet or to see what kind of crud is on it? Or, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
If it isn't broke don't fix it until it does break... the next time you do change your fluid drop the pan just to see what it looks like if you're that curious but by no means do you need to go through that headache just to have a gander
I change the fluid as well every 30k. I finally dropped the pan and changed filter at 300+ and it was nearly perfect. Nothing can replace proper maintenance.

Agreed, maintenance is key on these trucks. I wouldn't mess with the magnet unless you're already doing a flush/filter change.
I never drop the pan. The flush is done through the transmission lines and since I don't change the trans filter I never have gone in there. I think I will just let sleeping dogs lie......
Did mine once. When I bought the truck in 2004 with 46k miles. A fellow Tech had it new and was in danger of loosing his house. Just needed money fast. And I was fortunate to have some.
Added a new cooler and inline spin on filter. Cleaned the pan and magnet.
Change the filter annually and the fluid every 30k miles.
No problems for 12 years and 150k of my miles and maintenance since.
