Need better pump for prelube system

I'm working on a prelube system and using a fuel pump to push engine oil into a 'T' connection between the outlet of a remote oil filter and the engine.

Sorry but my other computer is broke and I don't have any way to reduce the size of the picture. Anyway the pump I'm using has a 3.7 GMP flow rate which is way too much for an oil pump. It bogs down and start over amping after about 2 seconds. I can hear oil squirting out of somewhere in the engine So I know its working. There is a check valve between the outlet of the pump and the T before it goes into the hose. Can anyone recommend a more practical pump with lower flow rate? I hope it didn't blow out any seals using this one or cause any damage.

Here's a diagram of the system if that helps.

I use a garden sprayer with the spray valve removed. The hose goes direct to a barbed 1/8" NPT fitting into the oil pressure port. I pump about a half a gallon in and she's good to go. Costs about $13.00.

so you pressurize the garden sprayer with air pressure?

Yes the hand pump on the sprayer has plenty of pressure to force oil through your engine. That's how I primed my Cummins before the first fire. I had oil pressure just running the starter without firing the engine.

Is this for a fresh engine on a stand or normal operation? There may be alternatives.

For the fresh engine on a stand, you can pull the distributor and use a correct size drive shaft and turn the engine oil pump with a drill motor. Oil loads down the drill motor pretty heavy so I can see how a fuel pump would have trouble.

For normal operation, a pressure tank ("Accusump") with electric valve operated by the ignition switch works well. The Accusump is normally 3 quarts with an internal air chamber. When the engine is running, the tank is pressurized by the engine oil pump. Shut her down and the pressurized oil stays in the tank... ready to blast out and prime the engine when the key is turned back on and valve opened. This can be done with a manual valve also.

The Accusump can be plumbed right into the main oil galley or plumbed into a filter sandwich adapter so the priming oil goes through the oil filter. Accusump recommends the adapter and filtered priming oil.

Even a little crud in whatever system you pick can damage a bearing if the priming oil is not filtered first.
