Well this is getting very frustrating. My tranny has gon south for the third time since I have owned this rig, in the last two plus years. It seems as though as soon as I get this thing up and running something else breaks.
I'm about ready to pull every thing and scrap the darn thing. But since the tranny and transfer case are still under warranty I am going to give it one more shot. But, I'm, also, very close to getting twin .50 cal weapons and use this thing for target practice.
Wondering if any one might have any recomendations?
Like torgue converter type. Or at least something that would be able to handle the hp of motor. It just seems that the tranny can't handle the motoer at all. engine was rebuilt, bored .30 over, Edelbrock mild rv cam, Edelbrock upper & lower manifold, Edelbrock throttle body, Mass Air flow conversion, 4.10 gear ratio, 33" x 12.5" tires.
Welcome to the wonderful world of the E4OD. The E4OD can just barely handle the stock 302 and 351 much less significanty modified versions. I know someone with a 97 F350 who has had at the very least three NEW E4OD's bolted up behind the 7.3 powerstroke. The diesel eats them for lunch. The kindest thing I have EVER heard about the E4OD is that its an interesting piece of "art". And it was put that way because we were in polite company with ladies present. I wish I could give you some positive feedlback to negate the concerns that you have, alas, I cannot. If its any consolation the A4OD and AXOD in the Taurus are considered to be worse by most professionals. Perhaps someone knows of a better (or at least stronger) tranny to bolt behind these stronger engines. I will risk being lambasted for saying it, but in my years with all makes, the tranny I'd love to drop into mine would be a TH350 or even better a TH400. But they are GM (no O/D either) and that would be just too sacriligious for me.

The Ford C-6 was just as good. My all-time favorite automatic is the Mopar Torqueflite 727, which held up well behind hemis and turbodiesels.
tite4x4 , do you know what is causing the failure. is it really the hp of your motor or is the tranny getting to hot. Might look into getting a larger cooler for your tranny. might help get a bit more life out of it. or just get the new one and sell it and buy a built
C-6. I know over drive is nice but it would be better then replaceing the tranny every 8-9 months.
good luck

my Bronco has a C-6 in it, but this fall when my new motor goes in, i'm splurging for a ART CARR built AOD to go in it, nice price, but with 400+HP , 33" rubber, 4.10 gears that over drive will still make it very streetable. DW
E4OD's made after 1994 are supposedly much stronger. The one in my 1991 motorhome (17k lbs with 460) went out at 30 k miles. I found a rebuilder who agreed to build it to the revised specs. It certainly feels much stronger, but I only have 6 k miles since the rebuild. Only time will tell.
Click the link below, check them out and give'em a call, now keep in mind there not cheap! mines gona run around $22-2,500.00 but they dont just pull one off the shelf and send it to you, the go over your set up with you and what you plan to do with it and build it acordingly, they've been around for a long time, and they stand behind there stuff. I received this quote from High Impact for an AOD "Bad Boy" transmission. All upgraded parts for high HP:
-------- AOD Transmission Upgrade Quote----------
An AOD conversion is an excellent Idea. We could go either way AOD or AODe, the electronic version would allow you complete computer programmable shift points and shift stiffness control, kinda nice, but the cost of the computer adds significantly to the cost of such a system, and unless you really want this feature, the simple AOD works well, is reliable and surprisingly cost effective. Here's a quote on the AOD conversion:
### AOD into Bronco Kit Total-> $1,339.25
1 "Bad Boy" AOD Transmission (Bolt up to Ford 302/351W) $1,195.00 $1,195.00
Personally my E4OD has lasted over 200,000 miles and is still kicking. So far the only problems I have had with it are the shift switch burnt out and the filter fell out once. (common for E4ODs)
Well Thanks for all the replies so far. I do currently have a tanny cooler installed, which I had put in last year when engine was rebuilt. So far the first two times I had tranny rebuilt by two different shops, and both shops said that the previous shop did a **** poor job. On the last rebuild the out put shaft had seized because the first shop didn't build it right. Aperrentaly it is a two bearing style and the shop did accomodate for it. Unfortunately tranny went out a month after warrenty. And, then someone stole the tranny housing for aluminum scrap. The housing I was going to take to first shop to pay for the second rebuild.
I will be checking out the web sights that were suggested, thanks. In the mean time the current tranny is still under warranty. I forgot to mention that my speedometer stopped working at the same time. The gear at end of speedo cable that slides into transfercase is fried. And since the transfer case was rebuilt at the same time, I'll have that checked out too.
