I'm looking to get my backup lights working again. I don't think the switch is even in the truck anymore. It's a 1977 F100 custom with the 302 as the original engine. I've looked at switches and such for it and I can't figure out where the switch sits. I bet NumberDummy has a diagram of it.
Straight drive or automatic? If 3 speed straight drive the backup light switch will be on the steering column between the firewall and rag joint. If 4 speed will be on transmission. If automatic will be on the steering column under the dash (part of the neutral safety switch. A search on this site should provide you with all the information you need.
Yeah, I should've asked that question too. I tend to think automatic.
On the 3 spd manual, it's also on the steering column, but at the base of it, in the engine compartment.
4Spd is screwed into the top cover of the trans. This is an NP435, the T18 is similar.
In '77 they're on the steering column, under the dash, near the firewall.
Thats the backup lamp switch? I took that thing out and bypassed it because I thought it was just a neutral safety switch. Then I got the truck that dial that sticks out of the column had broke off and I had to manually pull that lever to i guess the "neutral" position in order to start it. I had no idea that also controlled the backup lights. but to everyone else no, it has a c4 automatic.

It's a compound switch and serves both functions. It the neutral start switch AND the back-up light switch.
The actuator pin breaking off is actually pretty common. They're still readily available and fairly easy to replace (if you're a contortionist). They just clip onto the shift tube.
GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 7 = 800-543-4959.

Well dang. I'm not a contortionist but I am determined so I will definitely get it done. Thanks for all the help guys.
Like I said, they just clip on the shift tube.
In the picture, see the hole in the clip? I use a small straight blade screw driver. Put the end of the screw driver in the hole and pry the clip off of the shift tube. There are holes in the shift tube that locate the actuator.
It's actually much easier if you drop the column but can be done with the column in place.
It seems like it would be easiest to pull the column up out of the dash, pop the broken actuator off, put the column back in place and pop the new actuator on and replace the switch.

If you're going to drop the column, replace the actuator and reinstall the switch before you reinstall the column.
NOS actuator ordered on ebay. $14 free shipping. Not sure if I should go NOS on the switch or if Dennis Carpenter will do. We sell them at O'Reillys but I like to keep things motorcraft/ford.
