1st Long Pull Since Work Completed

Title says it all,

Heading out tomorrow for a much needed vacation. Babys first time at the beach too. As some of you may remember I did a bunch of work to the truck over the winter, reseal my injector, EGR cooler delete, FIM repair/Tune, HPO System refresh, fresh fluids and filters etc. So the time has come to put it all to the test and see how the new combo works, I guess the only thing really new is the Atlas 40 added to the mix.

I honestly have to say I'm always a little nervous when I first head out, seems as though I pick up on every little thing the truck does for the first 100 miles or so before I calm down and just enjoy the trip and time away with my family.

So heard to hoping for a successful trouble free trip, as the usaually always are. I know when I get back it will be decision time for the trans as that appears to be my weak link right now.

Also looks as though we will be trading the current 5er for a new 1 with a center bunk house to keep the peanut happy. All in all its not a super long trip compared to some of the stuff you folks do, it will be just shy of 500 miles 1 way. So if anyone is in OC Maryland for the week, PM me and maybe we can meet up for a beer.

Only thing I'm a little nervous about is the Atlas 40, but Ill keep a close eye on my EGT's as always. Ill report back tomorrow after we get set up and settled in.

We haven't really looked hard yet. The plan was to go to Hershey this year but we've got a trip planned that weekend. All I know is center bunk, a bed I fit in, better tired and dual A/C. So far that's the short list. Heartland is at the top of the list for us Jayco is a close second followed by the Montana line

As far as the trucks performance it ran awesome. I managed to keep the EGT's around 900-1000, ECT averaged 200 and EOT was always 5* more, fuel pressure hung right around 60psi, FICM voltage was a constant 48.5, battery voltage 14.8, trans temp maxed out at 174. I'd say that's pretty good considering the truck ran 8 hours straight, didn't even shut down for fuel, ambient air temp was 95-98 during the bulk of the trip. I guess the only thing I would change is the FICM tune so I wouldn't have to keep such a close eye on the EGT's but according to my log form 2 years ago it's about 100* consistently higher.

As usual this truck continues to not disappoint, it may just force me to do that Dually conversion and I'll put that extra coin on the new 5er.

Sounds like it's running up to par. We too are looking at Heartland. The design and quality is there and we like the layout for a toyhauler. We want the Heartland Cyclone 4000. If you go to Hershey bring the walking shoes. Also if you camp at the campground they have a shuttle bus. Also if you're going to the park, you can get discount tickets and a free preview day at the office. Best of luck in whatever brand you choose.

Thanks crew,

Internet here is spotty at best, I was planning on doing some research while I'm here. Just walking around talking to folks and see what they have. We really like the center bunk lay out, hopefully Heartland can accommodate.

I know heartland has an oakmont 390 with middle bunk. Also a Big country 3850. Take a look at Jayco 377 RLBH as well.

Wish I had something to report, but the truck ran great on the way home as well, no issues. Sorry the thread was kind of boring.

I think the only thing I may change is try to get some FICM tuning that will keep my EGT's down a little more while towing. I know that's kind of an oxymoron, but I think someone mentioned in another thread that there was folks out there doing it. I'm pleased with the throttle response that the Atlas 40 gives, but I don't like having to constantly monitor the EGT"s.

I may also go to a 4.10 gear if the trucks gonna stick around, which right now I see no reason why it isn't, unless someone hits the lottery and wants to buy me a new truck.

I always kick around the idea of a FICM tune but I like my EGTs where they are at with the 8k tune. I have 4.10s and rarely see 1200 pulling 8% grade 12k trailer.

What are your EGTs towing flat @ 60? I'm right around 700+-

My EGT's towing flat are right around 800-850*. I'm seriously considering a 4.10 or 4.30 gear swap, I figure with 305's on there a 4.30 will get me between a 4.10 and a 4.30 and the truck should work a little less on hills and initial take offs.

I have 3.73's in it now and unloaded its fine, but you can tell the taller tire robs some power.
