2x4 conversion

I started a thread on this long ago. I may be the poster boy for ADD and at 64 am very busy in other things. Instead of digging it back up I want to start another with a few additional questions.

First off the conversion of a 2x4 F350 to a 4x4 F350 is a bolt together task. The problem I had was a 2x4 F350 with some CPU from another ford product that would work the windows and run the motor. I think this is the number 1C3T-14B205-EB. I bought more than one of them. Turns out that the ford dealers in my area know nothing about their trucks. I went to my areas big truck dealer for some help getting the 4x4 trans switches to work. He said I had to change my dash board because there were NO 4x4 indications in the dash of a 2x4. Major BS. Just like the running gear conversion just a bolt in operation. With the right CPU the dash indicators are all there. Why would ford make two different dash boards for the same truck. Just like why would ford make two different frames for their crew cab truck? They don't. If there is a hole there you don't need don't use it.

Now to my questions:

Has any one went to 3.00 or 3.10 gears instead of the 3.73 gears that come in the truck. I see no reason to turn this motor over 2000 rpm to run 70 mph. I put 18" wheels on with very little help in lowering the rpm.

I was going to ask about the ball check in the trans cooler bypass, but why? I am going to remove it when I remove the bypass. My winters rarely get below 30 deg and when they do I'm not going any where.

Thanks to Ford Truck Enthusiasts for ALL the information

Here is a link to a forum where a guy named Dave Whitmer used to hang out.

Congrats to Dave Whitmer on 26 mpg and Diesel Power - Diesel Forum - TheDieselStop.com

If he is still active anywhere, he is the only person I know that has done it.

The only way that I know of to do it without having to do both differentials is with a Gearvendor or, if you can find one, a US Gear overdrive.

Thanks for the links.
That's what I would expect. My truck has no snap anyway, why not put that torque to turning the tire. I have not been able to find a ring and pinion set. Most likely will have to have one built, or two, one for the front.

What does temperature have to do with this? The bypass has no temperature component. It doesn't know if the trans is hot or cold. All it is there for is to bypass the coolers if the cooler circuit gets restricted. The bypass has nothing to do with warming the trans as many people seem to think.

The return from the coolers is used to lube the rear half of the trans. If the cooler circuit is restricted or a cooler gets clogged the bypass opens, keeping lube flowing to the rear of the trans. If you remove the bypass and get a restriction you'll need a new transmission very, very quickly. There will be no warning, it will just stop turning.

Mark, Thanks for your information. I was under the impression that the bypass was temper sensitive with a by-metal spring. Must have been my misreading of one of those Chilton books. In this case there is NO reason to remove the bypass
