92 zf5 on 91...will it work?

i have a zf5 out of a 1992 that i want to put into my 1991...will i be able to make it work since i have a cable driven speedo? my truck is 2wd.

if it will not work will i be able to get a cluster, sensor from a 92 and convert mine to a sensor driven speedo?

thanks in advance

The 92 ZF5 has no provisions for a speedometer cable, the hole is cast there, but not machined out nor is there any provisions on the tail shaft ... However, if you have eyes on the transmission verify if it has one or not, you could get lucky!

As for changing over to a 92 dash, I do not know, never tried!
Someone else may know.

The 92 uses a oss or vss sensor for speedo. pretty tough to make that work in a 91 that had both cable and a oss sensor. I have a older Ford truck that the speedo doesn't work in. I use a cheap Gps to monitor my speed.

I have tried to research the problem I'm having but most are 4x4 so the speedo is though the transfer case which sucks because I'm 2wd

The F450 uses a 4x4 ZF5, the E-Brake adapter attaches where a Transfer case would, adapting it to 2wd and giving the F450 a Driveline E-Brake.

It will not help solve your Speedometer issue in the 91 with a 92 Transmission.

A solution could be as simple as adding a transfer case and leaving it in high range, no front driveline ... Not a path I would go down though!

EDIT
You would be better off finding a 87-91 ZF or forget about the Speedometer, something I wouldn't do!

I like the idea of a HUD GPS speedo. I just don't want anything bulky because I like a sleek dash look (old truck I know but it's my baby I take care of it)

Although I hate the fact of the speedo not working it will be weird in a way for me (hard to explain I know I sound silly)
And the odo not working although I know some GPS can track the odo.

Honestly I will probably go with the HUD GPS route if it is a good sleek design and can keep an odo.

I got the transmission for a REALLY good deal.. 155k miles in working condition for 100$.

Can anyone chime in on their experiences with the GPS speedo?

Thanks everyone!!!

I see why you are trying so hard, that's a decent price.

In all honesty I know I can sell the zf for at least my money I paid for it but then I would be put back to square 1 of looking for the correct zf
