I just bought this 93 ranger 4.0 4x4 the speedometer did not work.So I found the the plastic gear at the end of the speed cable/sensor was wore out.So I replaced the plastic gear, now the speedo works but it floats around bouces around and reads aleast 20mph slower than what I am going. It does have oversized tires but the speedo should at least have a nice smooth reading but this thing hops all over the place floats around if your going say 15 mph it floats between 15 and 25 the faster you go the more mph it reads slower. If you going say 15 your probaly going 25 but the faster you go the more off it reads I was going around 70 on inerstate and it read 40.Please and help will do.
I had this same problem on my previous ranger, a 2000. it sounds like you still have a faulty speedometer sensor. i would return it and get a new one (you can buy them online from auctions and such, but its not worth it, its only $20 from the dealer.) Also check the terminals that it plugs into, they may just need to be cleaned, WD40 works great because its a great de-greaser, and is non-conductive.
The speedometer on a 93 is mechanically driven and not electric. When you had the cable off, did you rotate the inner cable with your fingers to check for binding/excessive drag?
If your cruise control works normally the VSS is fine. When I had this problem on my 95 Taurus, it was a bad "jewel" in the seedometer head. The needle rides in the "jewel" Had a new one pressed in at a speedo shop for 120 bucks. The guy told me this was a very common problem.
As Cowboy sez, it could also be a binding cable.
Yes I spunn the cable with my fingers and it felt fine needle appeard to move smooth as I spun the cable. And to the other reply my cruse control does not work.
Pull the codes, i you're lucky your scanner will flash a code 29 "VSS signal voltage is too low" & that will be your CC problem. Since the speedo cable turns smoothly the "jewel" is probably your spedo problem.
I had the same problem with my '86 ranger. When I went to get it checked out, it was going to be some major repair work to get it replaced and all. So i just left it broken. I Left it broken, it was kind of nice not having to look down at your speedometer when you're driving. Sorry i don't really have any advice for ya, but i just thought the problem was just unique to my ranger.
