Ball joints

Hi guys was wondering if I can find out how to check the ball joints on my van. I had heard to lift the wheels off the ground and lift each tire from underneath with a prybar? Or maybe a better method.

Thanks

1999 E-150
Base model 4.6

you lift the tires off the ground , then you grab the tire with hands at 12 and 6 o'clock and try to move the tire up and down to check if there is play....If it moves at all the Ball Joints are baked....It also helps to have someone looking at the joints themselves to verify that there is play...But ussually you can feel it...For the Tie rod ends you put your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock and check for play in a similar way...thats how I do it anyway....
Good Luck

I usually use a bar on the bottom of the tire when checking them. A little lever action.

This is what I've been thinking.

Ball joints must be checked unloaded, and depending on its position that would involve lifting by the suspension or by the frame.

before two months i replace the whole Chassis infront of my van. it wasnt possible to feel Play in the balljoints before, while i disassembled the Chassis i've seen most of the Joints where done... If ist possible to feel, your Joints were completely dead. the way i see it is heavy cars arent checkable by Hand or bar. Not reliable.
