I've driven both and can't tell the difference between them at all.

I'll be ordering all of my trucks with the lightest springs from now on and using air bags.

But doesn't that configuration (lowest set of springs) affect the declared cargo and trailer capacity?

No, front spring choice has no effect on GVWR, payload, or trailer tow ratings. It just allows for more flexibility on loading.

If you have a family, I strongly suggest that you take your wife and kids on a test drive to see what they think of the truck with and without the "upgraded" springs. The trucks I drove were bouncy, especially on the highway, with the stiffer springs and gave much sharper jolts on uneven road surfaces. Driving the various trucks back-to-back really highlights the differences.

The 2016 F350 long bed crew cab with the standard springs rode very, very smoothly. The worst truck I tried was a short-bed crew-cab with the snow plow package. That truck had a very rough and bouncy ride.

I drove a '16 F-350 a week ago that had the camper package and (I think) the snow plow prep. I thought it was OK in the front seats but my son in the back seat hated it.

On the current gen, the plow prep and camper package both max out the front springs. I always found it silly that I had to order the plow prep to protect my warranty even though I already ordered the camper pkg. and the dual alts so the plow prep gave me absolutely nothing for it's cost except warranty protection. I'm sure the same will apply to the 17's.

Even the buyers guide indicates you should expect degradation of the ride with the heavier front spring package. I have used a camper for 15 years without the additional springs (2001 was a leaf front end) and have vowed to have a fully adequate spring package to support the camper. Air bags in the rear don't adequately support the camper in turns and I believe inadequate front springs contribute as well.

I understand. I certainly recommend the correct springs for your application. Some report no ride difference with the heavier springs, and some, like myself, think the difference is very significant. Still suggest a test ride.

BTW, I would think that air bags with a good rear sway bar would be the best bet for a camper.

I changed the factory front and rear sway bars for the Hellwig Big Rig which is the strongest on the market several years ago. Help but not enough. The problem I have with air bags is once the vehicle is brought back to neutral height it is off the helper springs and essentially only compressing the main springs the same as if empty. The AirLift and Firestone type systems are not meant to be full support, only helpers. Torqlift has a couple of spring applications which engage the helper and overload springs much earlier than factory design and can be engaged or disengaged easily. I will approach the camper lean issue from that angle first this time and then add the air bags if I still feel I need them. There is a full air ride system which completely eliminates the springs which I wish I could justify. TFL Trucks did a nice review of the install and results.
