Question, I am looking at replacing my stock rims with some aftermarket rims. I understand that you need a load e range tire for towing big loads, or at least in my case I do. My question is, do wheels have same type of rating??? The wheels that came stock on my truck are aluminum, will any aftermarket wheel work?? I have a 02 PSD Crew 4x4.
If you look hard enough you can find the weight rating for wheels - you might have to call a place and ask before you buy. I think forged wheels (Weld wheels) are stronger than cast (cheaper knockoffs) but you're going to spend about 2x as much $$ for the forged. If you're worried - go with forged.
All wheels have to be made to DOT specs. If they are made for that vehicle they have a certain standard to meet, the after market wheels will usually exceed the spec., they will support more weight that the factory rims will carry. When you get into forged wheels thats different they are about 20% stronger that cast and far surpass the DOT spec. But you have a higher cost to them because of the added manufacturing cost.
Also as you increase the tire side so does the load rating. If you get a stock size tire 265-75R16, I believe , it will have to be a load range E, But if you go to a 315-75R16 it will be a load range D and it will actually supprort more weight than the E if you read the specs. from the manufacturer.
