I've been chasing a weird vibration for a long time. Been through all the usual suspect i.e. drive shaft, angle, "U" joints, tires, wheel bearings and more. I've started to blame it on the transmission but it has good fluid and no other problems. Starts about 60mph and kinda runs all through the truck.
I occurred to me in the middle of the night that I once broke an axle right at the bearing and the wheel, hub and bearing left for parts unknown. I wasn't going fast at all when it happened but the truck did drop on the housing/brake backing plate. Some idiot overheated the axle to get the bearing off.
Any ideas on how to check for straightness or how much will cause probs?
Center support bearing changed out? Just about every old truck I've seen, these bearings are always lunched. This will noticeably degrade noise and vibration levels at highway speeds, heck even if that's not the problem here it's worth replacing.
I would start by checking the next obvious on the list - the tires. If a belt has broke you'll get a vibration. A "hump" in the offending tire/tires will be observable if you look close.
On checking the axles, other than pulling one and looking, I'm at a loss.
